'Tis the season to give' and why not give back to your community by donating some of your time to volunteer this Holiday season. Most Canadians are very fortunate to not have to experience poverty however there are many families who still live in poverty. Alarmingly BC has one of the highest child poverty ratings in the country. According to the child and youth advocacy group First Call in 2013, British Columbia's child poverty rate is 18.6%, a significantly higher rate than the national rate of 13.3%. That’s over 153,000 children who live in poverty in BC alone.
One of the organizations that have been working tirelessly to reduce the number in the Tri-Cities has been SHARE Family & Community Services, who is in need of your help with volunteers for their many services that they offer to the unfortunate families that are struggling with poverty in the Tri-Cities.
Just a few hours a week would be an incredible help. To learn of their services and volunteer needs please visit their website at: www.sharesociety.ca/volunteer
If you are not able to give any of your time you can still help by donating; money, gift cards, a toy to the Toy Bank, or a non-perishable food item to their Food Bank. Visit the SHARE Toy Bank Tree at Coquitlam Centre on Level 2 in the cooridor between the GAP and Aritzia to dorp off your donation.
