This grade of steel is hypoallergenic because it is low carbon vacuum melted. This process basically sucks out the nickel from the metal. Nickel is one of the most common causes of metal allergies. Please note: this process cannot remove all the nickel. As a result, a very small amount of people react to 316LVM surgical steel. If this is you, we recommend checking out our implant grade titanium plugs and tunnels - we have options in blackline or anodized titanium that won't irritate any metal allergies. The plugs have little crystals inside. However, if you unscrew the back, the crystals can be replaced with whatever you like.
