Losing weight in our fast paced, hectic world isn’t easy. Nutrition has gone by the wayside, and people are more concerned with flavour and speed. Calories and ingredients in food always seem to be the casualties. Counting calories and weighing food are not viable options. If this sounds like your dilemma then Lose-it is for you. Lose-It is made from the rind of the Indian fruit Garcinia. In the late 1960s, scientists discovered an acid in this small pumpkin-like fruit somewhat similar to the citric acid found in fruits like oranges and lemons . This acid—called hydroxycitric acid, or HCA—has ridden a massive ride of popularity over the last 20 years as word of its use and scientific evidence has spread. Garcinia’s first push came in the ‘1990s, after several clinical studies concluded that garcinia caused weight loss. Researchers discovered that garcinia has the ability to block a portion of an enzyme called citrate lyase, which helps turn sugars and starches into fat. By blocking that enzyme specifically, carbohydrates get diverted into energy production rather than accumulating as body fat. Then, when you burn fat through exercise, there’s less to replace it, and your overall fat level goes down. The result is less fat and weight loss. Garcinia also has appetite suppression abilities. Its mode of suppressive action is quite unique. It increases the level of satiety—satisfaction you receive from food—making it easier to eat less. The mechanism by which it achieves this isn’t entirely clear yet but researchers believe that garcinia use may send an appetite-suppressing signal to the brain via a serotonin precursor. Given that studies have shown elevated serotonin levels in subjects who took garcinia supplements, this seems likely. In the early 200’s a group of landmark studies on garcinia were conducted by Georgetown University in Washington. The studies followed overweight individuals over 8 weeks. The results were astonishing, showing weight loss, decreased BMI, an increase in the body’s ability to burn fat and dramatic increases in serotonin the “happy hormone”. Participants had more energy and a more positive outlook. Researchers caution that garcinia is an “aid” in weight loss, but not the miracle. It’s part of a program, be reasonable about it. It won’t work in two or three days. These positive results led Dr. OZ to promote garcinia on his popular show ,The Dr. OZ Show. “Thanks to brand new scientific research, I can tell you about a revolutionary fat buster,” Oz said on his show in November 2012 with the words “No Exercise. No Diet. No Effort” on the screen behind him. “It’s called Garcinia cambogia.” That is further than most experts are willing to go. Most feel that garcinia can be effective as part of a weight loss / maintenance plan that includes relatively healthy eating and moderate physical activity.
